...the latest towering building planned to grace the new york city skyline is one madison avenue by architect daniel libeskind. the 54-story condo building stands out from the crowd of glass towers by incorporating a series of ‘sky gardens’ at different parts of the building. the green spaces would be enclosed in cylindrical glass tubes at the centre of the building and cut-aways in the face would open them up to the outside. the openings also provide the condominiums in that part of the tower with balconies...

Digital Materiality in Architecture outlines the theoretical context for the full synthesis between digital and material processes in architectural design and fabrication. Projects and research from the architecture firm Gramazio & Kohler as well from their department at the Faculty of Architecture of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) illustrate the pervasive effect on the architectural physis that lies in Digital Materiality – the digital enrichment of material elements and processes.

About the editors:
Fabio Gramazio and Matthias Kohler are partners in the Zurich architecture and urbanism practice Gramazio & Kohler. The office’s projects include the Gantenbein winery façade, the Tanzhaus theatre for contemporary dance, the Christmas lights for the Bahnhofstrasse in Zurich and the sWISH* Pavilion at the Swiss National Exposition Expo.02. Gramazio & Kohler’s contributions to exhibitions include Structural Oscillations, a structure built on-site by the transportable robotic unit, R-O-B, at the 2008 Architectural Biennial in Venice.
Together, Gramazio and Kohler hold the Chair for Architecture and Digital Fabrication DFAB at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH). Their research focuses on the exploration of highly informed architectural elements and processes and produces design strategies for full-scale automated fabrication by the department’s robotic construction facility.

Ocho casas y tres patios, literamente. Encerrados entre medianeras, la fachada expresiva como pocas, es capaz de representar a todo el edificio con un único gesto, plegándose ligeramente. Incluye elementos para la captación pasiva de calor y permite a los usuarios abrirla o cerrarla.

"No le preguntaron nada, no trataron de hablar con ella, ni siquiera la visitó un médico", asegura Hassan Shire Sheik, director del Proyecto de Defensa de los Derechos Humanos en el Este y en el Cuerno de África (EHAHRDP). "Se hacen llamar tribunales pero no tienen ningún conocimiento legal". Shire Sheik confirma las palabras del padre de Asha según las cuales la niña se quedó sin defensa alguna también por el carácter minoritario de su clan, que no posee armas. "Nadie de su clan estaba en la ciudad, nadie armado estaba a su favor". Sheik, impulsor de diversas asociaciones de defensa de los derechos humanos en Somalia -por lo que tuvo que huir de su país y refugiarse en Canadá y Uganda-, se sulfura al hablar del caso: "Ni cuando las Cortes Islámicas se hicieron con el control de Mogadiscio en 2006 vimos ejecuciones así. ¿Dónde está la ley? ¿Quién la defendió? ¿Cómo se mata a una niña de catorce años? Están locos".

Esta noticia me ha hecho sentir triste.
